Kathleen Doherty
Kathleen Doherty is a dancer, choreographer, and dance educator based in Kjipuktuk/Halifax, Nova Scotia. After earning a Bachelor of Commerce from Saint Mary’s University, she pursued her artistic training at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks’ Professional Training Program in Calgary, deepening her love for jazz dance and performance.
In 2012, Kathleen returned to Halifax and co-founded Votive Dance, where she continues to serve as Artistic Director. Through Votive Dance and beyond, she has performed and created work for numerous companies and festivals including Live Art Dance, Mocean Dance, Kinetic Studio, Rhythmically Speaking Dance (Minneapolis), Festival of Dance Annapolis Royal (FoDAR), Connection Dance Works, Alberta Dance Festival, and The Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland. Her recent choreographic projects with Votive Dance include WHODUNIT? and BASSline.
Kathleen is a passionate educator who shares her expertise in jazz and contemporary dance across the city. She teaches regularly at The Maritime Conservatory, Halifax Dance, House of Eights, The Dance Institute, and Votive Dance. She is also a part-time faculty member at Dalhousie University’s Fountain School of Performing Arts and serves as Artistic Director for the Young Company of Halifax Dance.
Kathleen is proud to balance her life as a working artist and mother to her son, Cillian, continuing to lead with creativity, curiosity, and community spirit.
