Aging Actively

Movement Classes for Older Adults

Each month, our qualified instructors visit The Berkeley Retirement Living, offering accessible and adapted classes to its residents! We love spending time with the residents and helping them get up and move their bodies!

The Benefits

The benefits of regular exercise and movement for older adults is invaluable in preventing disease and reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes, improving mental health, and encouraging social engagement. We are seeking the means to expand our Aging Actively classes and build the program to be accessible to more individuals. Funding would be used towards teaching training, facilitator costs, instructor and interpreter fees, and specialized equipment.

The Class

Aging Actively classes are created to be safe, inclusive and accessible to all, including varying levels of ability, mobility and those with any physical or cognitive limitations. Class begins with a seated warm-up that is designed to target the effects of arthritis and joint pain, as well as to improve circulation throughout the body.

Following the warmup, participants learn a variety of simple movement sequences that stimulate both the body and the mind.

Each class is led by a qualified, trained instructor who safely guides and encourages participants through each section of the class. A teacher's assistant is also on hand to demonstrate a seated alternative for those with mobility limitations. Standing sections include using the back of the chair for balance, and cross-body movement to promote eye-teaming skills, coordination and enhance whole-brain thinking.
